Dr. Martin Dineen
It’s hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember.
We lost a valued member of the InterVol team on Friday, January 13, 2023. Dr. Martin "Marty" Dineen was a devoted surgeon who frequently traveled to Haiti, performing life-changing procedures for those afflicted by lymphatic filariasis.
As a devoted humanitarian, Marty performed more than 1,000 hydrocele surgeries in a difficult and under-resourced environment in Leogane, Haiti. Marty traveled with Dr. Ralph Pennino to Leogane following the 7.0 earthquake in 2010. For months, Marty and Ralph traveled back and forth to Haiti, providing live-saving surgeries.
Dr. Dineen was recognized by the University of Notre Dame physician Alumni peers in 2014 when he was awarded the Dr. Tom Dooley Society Founders Award for his humanitarian efforts. He served on the American Urological Association Board of Directors, and was awarded the AUA Distinguished Service Award for more than two decades of humanitarian service in Haiti working to eliminate the scourge of urogenital elephantiasis.
Marty will be remembered for his many contributions to health policy and his dedication to the children of Leogane. He was instrumental in the foundation of Ecole l'Erudit de Leogane with Jean Marc Brissau. The school serves more than 100 children and provides them with a state-of-the-art education in addition to a hot meal each day.
