A Followup on Hurricane Matthew

February 21, 2017

The outpouring of support from the Rochester community in the wake of Hurricane Matthew was immense, and the citizens of Léogâne continue to send their thanks.

Having seen their town destroyed first by the devastating 7.0 earthquake in 2010, and then again by Hurricane Matthew's floodwaters, the people of Haiti are no strangers to hardship. For those with debilitating diseases, these natural disasters are particularly straining.

Afflicted with lymphatic filariasis, a mosquito-borne disease that has caused massive swelling in her legs, a 36-year-old mother of 3 in a rural community outside of Léogâne had no choice but to make do with what little she could find after Hurricane Matthew destroyed everything they owned. Her entire family, including a son with a severely broken leg, slept on the dirt floor of this tiny shack held together with rope, a wish, and a prayer.

It was only thanks to the generosity of Rochesterians, particularly the building materials donated by LeChase Construction, that they are finally getting back on their feet. In addition to an allotment of the bedding, clothes, food, and toiletries donated by Rochester families, InterVol team members in Haiti are building a sturdy home for this family, who have been without the comfort of a floor, 4 walls, and a roof since the beginning of October, 2016.

Thanks to the two container-loads of items, the boy was able to return to recuperate at home, and is resting comfortably on clean sheets and a pillow, basic items that this family and thousands of others just like them all across Haiti have never taken for granted. Along with access to potable water, thanks to the water purification systems from Untapped Shores, this family and countless others in the Léogâne community have now gone from merely surviving to thriving.

On behalf of this family and every other family that can't thank you directly, THANK YOU!
