Spring Cleaning: Don't Toss, Donate!

Believe it or not, but spring is finally upon us here in Western New York! If you're like most people, soon you'll start doing some good old-fashioned spring cleaning. But before you head to the thrift store or the dumpster with those items that no longer spark joy, we would like to remind you that InterVol will gladly accept many common household items.

InterVol takes a wide variety of medical supplies and equipment -- no item is too large or too small. We also take things that you might not normally classify as medical supplies like cotton balls & swabs, unused sample-size shampoo & soaps, instant hot or cold packs, and more. Check out our Accepted Supplies page to see the types of supplies & equipment we can accept. Below are some common household items that can also be donated if new & unused:

  • Baby or Adult Diapers & Underpads

  • Band-Aids

  • Tissues

  • Toothbrushes, floss, & sample-sized toothpaste and mouthwash

  • Hairbrushes/combs

  • Oral thermometers

Other common home-care medical items InterVol accepts include:

  • Working Glucometers with matching test-strips

  • Syringes (new, must be at least 1 year before printed date of expiration)

  • Gauze/bandages/wound dressings

  • Ostomy supplies

  • Wheelchairs/walkers in good working condition, no rust or missing parts

  • CPAP machines in good working condition, no missing parts

Please consider InterVol this season as you work through your spring cleaning checklist. Your donations truly make a difference in the lives of our neediest neighbors, both near and far. Communities that receive InterVol aid include those recovering after a natural disaster, like our most recent shipment of supplies to Lee County, AL following the series of tornadoes that devastated that region. We also consistently send supplies to local organizations here in Rochester as well as organizations across the globe that provide aid to communities that lack access to adequate medical care.

We are truly grateful for your support!

Please note: While InterVol cannot accept pharmaceutical waste in any form, including over-the-counter and prescription medications and vitamins, there are safe, FREE ways to properly dispose of them. The Monroe County Ecopark and many local police stations will accept them and safely destroy them.

Most of those locations will also take your sharps/needles as long as they are properly packaged in either an approved sharps container or in a sturdy alternative that is capped and labeled as "SHARPS." Monroe County DES suggests either a two-liter bottle or a rugged laundry detergent bottle.
